Just six years ago Cleveland Beer Week began on the North Coast, and this year, organizers have really outdone themselves with over 350 brew-related activities on the calendar, at over 125 venues–adding an extra day to accomodate even more flagship beer events! That’s a lot of fun and suds! Of course, I’m most excited about the re-release of New Albion Ale with Platform Beer Company on Friday, October 17th. But whether you’re an East-sider, a West-sider, a downtown dweller, or someone who doesn’t mind crossing the Cuyahoga and hitting it all–you are going to find an event or two that’s right for you. You can even feel good going to all these flagship events, knowing that proceeds benefit the Jimmy Malone Scholarship Program. So drink up!
Once again, we get this party started with the Collaboration Kickoff in several area neighborhoods, including E. 4th Street, Lakewood, Tremont, Ohio City and Cedar/Lee. (The Cedar/Lee event takes place on Oct. 11th, all the other kickoffs happen on Oct. 10th.) For $25/per person (advance sales) you can visit various neighborhood haunts for a taste of a different collaboration beer:
- Yadig?, a Berliner Hopfen-Weiss with 4.8% ABV by Great Lakes Brewing Company and Oskar Blues Brewery of Longmont, Colorado.
- OH-MI!, an English Mild Ale with 4.5% ABV by Buckeye Brewing and Saugatuck Brewing Company of Douglas, Michigan.
- Brooklyn Dog, a Saison with 4% ABV by Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. and Brooklyn Brewery of Brooklyn, New York.
- Fat Devil, a Black India Pale Lager (IPL) with 6% by Fat Heads Brewery and Devils Backbone Brewing Company of Roseland, Virginia.
- Dead Canary, a Grisette Ale with 4% ABV by The Brew Kettle and Full Pint Brewing Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Other Flagship Events include a Belgian Social; the Ales on Rails ride on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad; a big Browns/Steelers Tailgate party; and my personal favorite, the beer and cheese pairing party, Culture Yourself, this year happening at the historic West Side Market. They’ve added a Rock and Brew Showcase at the Beachland Ballroom; the Offshore Pour on the Nautica Queen; Oskar Blues Can Jam at the Cleveland Agora; and the ever-popular BREWzilla, A Monster of a Beer Tasting at the 5th Street Arcades, a new venue this year.
The entire week is extended to Sunday, Oct. 19th with the Bluegrass Brew Bash on Whiskey Island from noon to 5 p.m. Local and regional bluegrass acts will take the stage while you sip a pint or two and enjoy food truck fare of all kinds. You can create your own itinerary and buy tickets to all of these flagship events, directly at the website: www.clevelandbeerweek.org.
So, Cleveland craft beer fans, here’s your chance to win tickets to your choice of two Flagship events: the Collaboration Kickoff (Ohio City neighborhood) or BREWzilla, a Monster of a Beer Tasting. Please leave me a comment here about which event you’d like to attend and why you’re excited about Cleveland Beer Week! I’ll draw a random winner for the Ohio City Collaboration Kickoff on Weds., Oct. 8th at noon; and then another winner for the BREWzilla tickets on Weds., Oct. 15th at noon. For an additional chance at winning, please Tweet me: “I want to win tickets to Cleveland Beer Week from @BrewersDaughter!” (NOTE: I have been offered Kickoff and Brewzilla tickets in exchange for promotion of these events. All comments are my own opinion. This is Cleveland’s moment to shine in the craft beer world, don’t miss out!)
