Another Auld Lang Syne

by Renee on December 30, 2010

We went to have ourselves a drink or two/but couldn’t find an open bar/we bought a six-pack at the liquor store/and we drank it in her car. –Dan Fogelberg, “Same Old Lang Syne”

Here we are, another year, another decade about to start. Everything you’ve ever heard about time speeding up as you get older is true, I guess that’s why it’s called a cliché. As we get set to say goodbye to 2010,  I still remember when Prince sang “Tonight we’re going to party like it’s 1999,” and that seemed eons away.

Last night there was another Cleveland craft beer meet-up, and 15 or 20 of us who met on Twitter or Facebook around our love of craft beers got together to raise a glass to the holidays and toast another year to come. At the beginning of this year, I didn’t even know most of those folks, and here it is 12 months later, and I’m so pleased to count them among my friends. One of the things I’ve discovered in 2010 is how great Beer People really are–on the North Coast and around the country.

The release in 2010 of Sierra Nevada’s Jack & Ken’s Ale brought that thought completely into focus for me. It started with an invitation to raise a toast to Jack with some SN reps as they tapped a keg of the 30th anniversary brew, and lead to the launch of my blog, and from there a trip to Colorado for the very first Beer Bloggers Conference. This fall also included my trip to Northern California where Jack started this whole crazy microbrewing thing, and the fun we had at Cleveland Beer Week. At every turn I met another group of great people who love great beer.

Looking ahead to 2011, I see more of the same–and I can’t wait. In March, I’ll be speaking with Maureen Ogle at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Francisco. There will be a second Beer Bloggers Conference in August in Portland, Oregon, and you can bet I won’t miss that. Not to mention another Cleveland Beer Week, and some other events and happenings that I’ve heard rumblings about– but it’s just too soon to post about them quite yet. Looking into my crystal beer stein, I see 2011 as being even better (and more beer-soaked) than 2010.

When the new year rolls around each holiday season, it also marks another year on Earth for me. My birthday is January 7th, and I always look forward to starting over fresh personally with the flip of the calendar page. The 7th falls on a Friday this year, and I’m going to kick it off by starting the Winking Lizard World Tour of Beers. You’re welcome to show up and join me as I contemplate another trip around the sun. We can drink a toast to innocence, and drink a toast to time. It’s another Auld Lang Syne. Cheers and happy new year!

Oh how I would LOVE to be there! I’ll be in Pennsylvania that weekend, but in case I don’t get another chance to say it, have a very happy birthday!

Your 2011 seems like it’s going to be incredible. I hope to make it out to one of the beer lover gatherings soon.

Happy New Year to you!

Great post, Renee! I love that Dan Fogelberg song, and now must go and listen to it. Then I’ll follow it up with Harry Chapin’s “Taxi,” just because the themes are so similar.

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of time speeding up as we age, or with your observation about how wonderful craft beer people are. I’m also very grateful for all of the new faces that have come into my life in 2010 as a result of a common interest, and I look forward to many more talks and laughs with all of you in 2011. As Brad said last night, Cleveland Beer Week is gonna be one heckuva party now that we all know one another!

Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for sharing your experiences with all of us!

Our conversation about time last night is what got me thinking about that post, Renee. Looking forward to more get togethers in 2011!

Glad to have made yer acquaintance this year, Renee. Looking forward to seeing you at BBC11, and maybe even before that in Cleveland. And if you find yourself in sunny Florida, be sure to give me a holler.

Aren’t Northeast Ohioans the best?! It’s amazing that you can throw out a tweet a few times, and you end up having a fabulous evening meeting some wonderful people. I REALLY am going to try my hardest to join you at the next one.

Happy early birthday and happy new years!
